Key Experiences

From Geographer to Auditor
At school I got involved in Young Enterprise and loved it, and off the back of that I got an internship with one of the big supermarkets within their corporate team looking at Climate Change. I enjoyed this so much I decided to do Geography at University.

Whilst at Uni I loved economic geography and retail geography, as well as statistical geography, and I spoke to KPMG employees at a careers fair and decided that I wanted to apply to do Audit because it allowed me to further my interest in business whilst doing maths!

I did the Audit Vacation Programme at KPMG last summer in Bristol, and loved it. I decided to come back, and now I am doing audit full time. Everyone gets on really well, and it is great to interact with clients on a daily basis.

Current Position

I look at whether companies have done the right thing
In my day to day job as an auditor there is a lot of testing involved - I check what companies are doing and test whether their processes are effective. This can be anything from ensuring that costs within the business haven't grown by more than expected margin, to checking that employees were added correctly to the payroll register, and expenses have been accounted for correctly within the year.

Although what I do varies, ultimately it leads to a member of my organisation being able to say that the accounts of an organisation are true and fair.

Main Motivations

I get to meet lots of new people and no day is the same
As an auditor I go to lots of different clients and find myself interacting with so many different people. One day I might be at a small company and the next I am with a multinational organisation, and this means I am constantly on my toes and having to immerse myself in different businesses.

I get to different things every day - one day I might be on a stock take for a client, and the next I am in a meeting with an Financial Director discussing changes in the year and how processes work.

My team is also always changing - I have been in the role for 3 months and have worked in 5 different teams so far!

Top Advice

Get as much experience as you can and don't give up!
My past experience has helped me to decide what to do - I've worked in climate change, I've worked in a consultancy firm, I've done some marketing, I've even spent time as a scientific researcher - but all of these things have helped me decide what I want to do. Although they aren't strictly linked to Audit, they have given me direction and an idea of what is important to me in the work place!

When you are applying it feels like you have filled out hundreds of application forms, and its hard to keep motivated, however you shouldn't give up! In the end it isn't about whether you are right for the role, it's about whether the role is right for you, and if you don't get it the job wasn't something you'd have loved.
